Learning Chinese Calligraphy in VR With Sponge-Enabled Haptic Feedback

Abstract Nowadays, virtual reality (VR) is becoming an important technique for various educational subjects. However, Chinese calligraphy, as a unique artistic form, remains under-explored in terms of learning VR configuration. This deficiency largely due to the challenge render delicate haptic feedback pen and brush during process writing. To achieve purpose rendering, existing works mostly use professional device (e.g. Phantom), which expensive not accessible common users. Our work presents novel yet simple approach calligraphy by using soft deformable sponge medium between handheld controller writing surface. We compared three different configurations on-device vibration sponge-enabled against baseline configuration with no force feedback. Based on both qualitative quantitative results from user studies, we found that sponge-based only provided comfort experience interactive but also accelerated performance novices. low cost, scalable produces realistic experience, offers alternative solution future development training systems calligraphy.
